Abraham was the first. Abraham was the only one. Abraham was the first to be called by God to go to a place which destination he knew not. It is almost like buying a ticket and boarding a plane to nowhere. At least now we know our destination. It was a time of travel by foot, donkeys and camels. Yet Abraham left Ur of the Chaldean and walked thousand of kilometres to Haran, and then to Canaan as God called him. Whenever God called, Abraham obeyed. That’s the essence of faith.
Likewise I have believed and followed this God, the God of Abraham who called me out of my own country to New Zealand before I even knew God or known by God. Then God called me from the ends of the earth to return to serve in Sabah 32 years ago. I have since followed His leading. From Melangkap in the interior of Sabah to the city of Kota Kinabalu and then to Singapore and from Singapore to Ranau, then into a rural Bible College in Namaus, 17 kms from Ranau where I served from a full three years (Jan 2016 to Feb 2019) before returning to Kota Kinabalu.
Within KK, I have moved three times. First pastoring a church in the north of the city, then interrupted by the pandemic and the draconian measures of vaccines mandate, I waited 18 months before teaching in a Seminary, one kilometre from the city centre, then moved again to my current place, east of Kota Kinabalu, in fact outside its precinct in the district of Penampang which is two-third the size of the island of Singapore. Including two positions that I had served upon election of delegates, I have served in about 10 positions in all, only two outside of my denomination, STS for one year and TTC for 6 years in Singapore.
This is not including twice I served as chairman of the pastors’ fellowship in KK and also in Ranau, making a total of 12 positions. Perhaps it is a good number, the number of the apostles who followed Jesus. I am now not looking for position as I concluded my sermon last Sunday and soon I will be without a salary so that I am indeed free from all men in order to be a slave to everyone for the sake of Christ.
